<image:caption>One of many brochures we received from various environmental and health agencies over the year. Most of the information turned out to be unreliable as new data became available. <image:caption>Snapshot of (from left to right) the World Financial Center; Gateway Plaza (foreground) and the Twin Towers (background); red brick apartment buildings in the southern section of Battery Park City. The ribbon of green along the river is the Esplanade, mentioned quite a few times in the book, including in the first poem "The Magic Hour" on page 19. The gray tower in the right foreground (the shortest of 3 in a row front to back) is where we lived. I took this picture during one of Sidney Horenstein's "Nooks and Crannies of New York Harbor' boat trips sponsored by the AMNH sometime around 1990. When Tower One (the North Tower, the 1st one hit, the second to fall, on the left) collapsed at 10:30, with the communications tower on top, all cell phone communication was lost.</image:caption>

<image:caption>An old postcard of Lower Manhattan from the air looking north, circa 1980, showing the new Twin Towers, Battery Park, and many iconic skyscrapers. To the left of the WTC, the extended flat gray area is Battery Park City, which was still landfill excavated from building the towers settling sufficiently to build on. The 3 towers already on it are Gateway Plaza, the complex where we lived. Our apartment was in the middle tower. The Gateway Towers were 36 stories high, which gives some sense of the enormous height of the WTC.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Close-up of an I-beam girder from the Twin Towers. On either side is engraved information about the significance of all the materials used in the memorial's construction. In 2007, when I first saw this memorial, it was only a few years old. The surface of the steel still showed burn marks, acid stains, gouges, dents, and scratches -- evidence of what had happened to it on 9/11. In the 14 years since then, wind, rain, and snow have polished it to the pristine appearance it has now. Of all the small town memorials I have seen, this is one of the most beautiful.</image:caption>
